Volunteering: Good for the Heart, Mind, and Community

We all know the rewarding feeling that comes from helping others—but did you know that volunteering can also boost your physical and mental health?

Research consistently shows that volunteers enjoy a wide range of health benefits. These include lower blood pressure and cholesterol, along with reduced rates of depression and anxiety. According to the Mayo Clinic, people who volunteer even have lower mortality rates compared to those who don’t—regardless of age, gender, or existing health conditions.

A comprehensive review of 28 published studies found that volunteering is linked to higher self-esteem, greater life satisfaction, and an increased sense of purpose and accomplishment. It also fosters stronger social connections and a deeper sense of community—both key factors in combating loneliness.

It also fosters stronger social connections and a deeper sense of community—both key factors in combating loneliness.

At Health Matters First, our founder, Shannon Calhoun, experiences these benefits firsthand through her volunteer work with Coastlove, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring and protecting coastal ecosystems through education and hands-on action.

Since 2021, Coastlove volunteers have:

  • Removed over 43,000 pounds of plastic and marine debris from coastlines and mangroves in the Florida Keys and Miami-Dade County

  • Planted more than 5,700 native plants to help restore coastal habitats

In addition to participating in community cleanups and planting events, Shannon contributes by writing grants for the organization and recently began serving on Coastlove’s Board of Directors.

If you're not already involved in volunteer work, consider finding a cause that speaks to you. Whether it’s the environment, education, healthcare, or animal welfare, volunteering can help you connect with others, reduce stress, and bring greater meaning to your life.
